Lord British, ruler of Britannia, received a visit from the powerful Time Lord. The ethereal seer instructed Lord British to found a system of Virtues, so that the people of the shards may become one with the original world and bind the shards together again. British reluctantly agreed, and established a Virtue Guard. Unknown to him at the time though, Lord Blackthorn, a principled yet ambitious man, had been listening to the conversation from the shadows. In response to the founding of the Virtues, Blackthorn had his own shrine commissioned, that of Chaos, for those who did not wish Order to dominate their lives. A prophesy was given during this time, which foretold that the world would never rest until these two old friends resolved their differences.
A mysterious cult known as the Followers of Armageddon appeared, and seemed determined to cast Armageddon and destroy the world. Fortunately they were stopped, but not before they unsuccessfully attempted the spell and instead just opened entrances into a mysterious land found beneath Britannia. A man from the old village of Paws, called CrawWorth, lead an expedition into this "Lost Land" and discovered human settlements, as well as two warring races, the snake-like Ophidians and the arachnid Terathans. Unfortunately, CrawWorth and the entire party died before reaching home.
Soon afterward, the Dark Temptress Minax began co-ordinating attacks on Britannia from her own desolate facet, with the help of several generals; Juo'nar, Keeonean and so on. Each general attacked a different city, but the fiercest battles took place in Trinsic, which eventually fell to overwhelming numbers of undead warriors. Later, Lord Dupre lead a liberating force into the city and destroyed a dark temple constructed by Minax, thus freeing Trinsic.
Lord British and Nystul consulted an ancient tome of knowledge, and in an attempt to escape Minax, opened moongates to a new Britannia. This world, named "Trammel" after the larger of the two Sosarian moons, flowed with the very power of the Virtues themselves, and prevented the wicked and evil from entering or attacking. Not everyone agreed with Lord British's plans though, and the Council of Mages rebelled and established a headquarters in Magincia Parliament to fight against both Lord British and Minax. Around the same time, a strange man known as "Revlo" provoked an uprising from within Minax's ranks and formed a cult in Yew who worshiped mysterious beings known as "Shadowlords". Soon, Old Britannia was engulfed in a four way war which still rages on to this day. It was around this time that Lord British himself disappeared, much to the despair of Britannia.
Sometime later, a mage named Gilforn was the first to discover another natural facet; Ilshenar. A world which was seemingly abandoned and had undergone terrible things, it later turned out to be home to the dark entity Exodus. This fusion of machine and demon had the power to span time itself, and drew forth an army of ancient warriors from the far past to help it conquer the newly available Britannia. The Juka, as they were known, had enemies from their own time though, the Meer. This cat-like race wielded great magical power and had put themselves into a deep sleep, awaiting their leader Adranath the Watcher, to awake them when the time came to fight the Juka again.
Lord Blackthorn, the founder of the Chaos Guard, had been missing for some time by this point. Then he revealed himself again, only this time as a lackey of Exodus. Blackthorn had been driven mad by the High Council's refusal to name him as Regent of Britannia in Lord British's absence, and so had betrayed humanity and let Exodus turn him into a mechanical abomination. He lead several attacks against his former friends, but, without warning, Exodus disappeared and left Blackthorn alone without an army. Enraged, the former nobleman made a suicidal attack against Yew and was killed by a mob of angry Britannians.
A new facet was discovered soon after, called Malas. This bizarre world defied logic, as it consisted simply of a few pieces of a shattered planet, floating gently through the great void. It turned out that Malas had been torn apart by a great war between dark Necromancers and chivalrous Paladins, two cults which had sprung forth from two brothers many years in the past.
Yet more time passed, and then a great thing happened; Lord British returned! The missing monarch did not explain his disappearance initially, and soon Britannia was under assault from Minax again. This time she used an army of Orcs to invade Moonglow, but they were beaten back. Impressed with his people, who had fought many evils without him, Lord British opened the Royal Britannian Guard to all who wished to join. This new revitalised militia force went on to battle Minax in many places, and it eventually was revealed that Lord British had spent many years gathering together as many pieces of the Gem of Immortality as possible. Much to the people's relief, he had decided not to bind them together again, but to take them with him into the Ethereal Void, so that they may be kept safe from the hands of the unvirtuous and dark forces that were gathering. Minax's armies were decimated in the short war, her generals all killed, and herself chased away. With the threat gone, Lord British was free to open the gateway into the Void, and leave Britannia forever with the shards. He did so in light of forgiving his friend Lord Blackthorn, and having his body entombed at a memorial site just outside his former friend's castle.
